A great headshot is not “just a headshot.”

It is a reflection of who you are and what you are trying to say about yourself.

It’s your calling card.

There are many different reasons why one might need a professional headshot such as for Acting, Modeling, Commercial, Corporate and Business.  A good headshot is required for just about everything from website bios and social media sites to printed materials like business cards and annual reports.  I have been a professional photographer in Toms River N.J. for over 25 years and during this time I have photographed many headshots.  I find that most folks are not aware of the different headshot categories or that each type requires a different photographic approach. I would like to offer some insight for those who are looking for a headshot and do not realize that headshots are not all the same.  Your headshot is your first impression and it should be photographed to picture your personal style and send a positive message about you to the viewer.   It should be engaging and you should look confidant and likable.  Below I have listed the different types of headshots along with some sample photos and an explanation of how they should be photographed in each category.

Modeling headshots and portfolio

First impressions are very important in the modeling industry and these photos mean everything.  Modeling agencies receive thousands of photos every week and agents will make their decision whether or not to represent you within a matter of seconds. At the very minimum submit one great headshot and one full body shot.  Choose the best photos, include some smiling and some with a more neutral mood. Use minimal makeup and if you have long hair wear it down and pull it back for some. Take time to choose your best outfits and work with the photographer who will help to get you into the best poses so that together you will create a great portfolio of images.

Theatrical headshots

Actor headshots may be more dramatic, they should convey a certain mood or say something about your personality.  Great professional photos are essential to your acting career, they are your tools of the trade. The final images should capture your unique style and experience so that casting directors will want you for the part. Theatrical headshots are usually photographed with a darker background.

You want to look smart, confident and professional.

Commercial headshots

Your commercial headshot should be warm and friendly, the goal is to come across as likable and trustworthy.  This style of headshot is used by actors who are looking to star in commercials and want to get their image out to a casting director.  You want to look relatable so that the viewers want to buy what you are selling.  Commercial headshots are usually smiling because casting directors are looking for a friendly picture to sell their product.

Corporate/Business headshots

A professional corporate or business headshot is the best way to represent your personal brand.  It is important for your headshot to make you look trustworthy and reliable and it should be engaging to the viewer.  The goal of this type of photo is to connect with and influence the viewer, its purpose is to create a visual relationship. This is your first impression and you need to send a consistent message whether it is published online, in-person or on printed materials.

A professional photographer should speak with you to determine your goals and help to create or maintain your personal brand through custom photography.
